More than 30,000 killed being mostly women and children and no deal on a permanent ceasefire yet, as well as charges of genocide against Israel to the response to the October 6th Hamas attack and kidnapping that led to about 1,200 deaths. The violence that resulted has been defended based on this attack, however, this horrific attack does not signal the beginning of the conflict. We could go back to 1917 and talk about the Balfour declaration and the intention to create a Jewish state. The creation of Israel in 1948 subsequent to the Nakba which led to mass displacement of Palestinians. Settler colonialism begins and the creation of an apartheid state forms. Sadly, when people are forced out of their homes and where more and more laws are created to control everyday life this creates the foundation for discontent. Increasingly, more and more world powers have come out against Israel's genocidal offensive. Students in the United States and throughout the world are protesting. The mainstream media is distorting the message, beholden to their monied interests, framing the protests as riots and antisemitic in a lazy attempt to use propaganda to quell the protest. However, with sickening images of mutilated bodies and information of starvation and mass killing, the typically playbook is largely ineffective. The US needs to condition aid on a permanent ceasefire; however, it seems unlikely that President Biden will move in this direction. Perhaps, other nations can apply enough pressure to get Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to agree to a permanent ceasefire. However, it will most likely require new leadership in Israel for a two-state or a one-state solution. I wonder if after all these years of violence if there can really be peace in the so-called Middle East.
