This post is in memoriam of my older brother. Older by 15 months and separated by over 800 miles there is a connection that cannot be broken. Growing up in Maryland not knowing where life would take us, the journey has ended in one sense, but in another way it continues. I can hear my brother's voice and more recently, I heard a recording of one of his songs. Sitting down at his memorial service, one of his neighbors recounted stories of his kindness to her and her kids. One of his best friends oozed love, passion and grief that felt palpable. She went above and beyond; assisting us in anyway she could. My cousin and aunt provided a place to stay and so much logistical support that it would not have been possible without them. Life is so fragile. I saw a last photo of my brother, which was very difficult to see. I will remember him much differently, with a smile on his face. As I enter 2023, I hope to animate the projects that have stalled and live for today. Kuumba, the sixth day of Kwanzaa, which is denoted as creativity, is something that makes me think of my brother. He wrote poetry, short stories, had some small acting roles and made music. Today, on New Year's eve, with grief and hope, let the healing begin and let joy find a crack in the penumbra of sorrow.
