Langston Hughes in his poem, "Let America Be America Again", uttered these words: "There's never been equality for me, nor freedom in this 'homeland of the free'". Black Americans are still seeking freedom since 1619 and have reached a moment in time, where enough is enough. This is not the first time when Blacks have revolted against the social order, but this time I'm hopeful we can learn from the failures of the past and find a path forward to freedom. We are not naive. We recognize that in every previous movement enemies within and without played a role in halting the progress. The government sought to appease the masses with progress watered down with escape clauses. Laws lacked sufficient enforcement mechanisms or were underfunded. We know that the fight for justice is not a sprint, but a marathon. We also are aware of the tricks, dirty tricks of the enemy. Therefore, we must strategize, organize and mobilize, not for a month, or a year, but for 10 or 20 years, because we are guaranteed to have a pushback to our progress. Racists and white supremacists will not sit idly by while there iconography is dismantled. People who teach their infants to hate black people are too indoctrinated in the cult-like mindset to be transformed, save by an act of God. The time is now. We must fight for true freedom. Never give up and never give in. Together, we can't be defeated. Ujima.
